I SURVIVED Intake! Now What?!

Congratulations! You’ve survived probably one of the most difficult times of your life. Okay, maybe not the most difficult time, but probably very stressful and never-ending. Well now you’ve made it through and can look forward to all the amazing opportunities and experiences that Greek Life has to offer.

I’ve offered similar advice many years ago to neophytes who crossed the threshold into their respective sororities. Now I’d like to offer information that would help everyone.

Remark #1: CELEBRATE!

You’re a neophyte, also known as a Neo, so enjoy your moment! “Coming straight off the burning sands” as they say and it is a time to celebrate. Buy nalia, participate in yard shows, and attend events. Just be safe and don’t get too crazy!

Remark #2: TRAVEL

The best time to be a Neo is during probate season. It’s a time of year where you can attend not only your organizations neophyte presentations all over the region but attend other organizations’ presentations as well. Let you presences be known be it one of you or 20+. Take advantage of every opportunity to network with members of your organization including local, regional, and national conferences.

Remark #3: DON’T FORGET TO DO WORK!

Any Pro will tell their Neo, “The work begins after you cross,” and truer words have never been spoken. A lot of us tend to forget the basic foundations of being in an organization. Service is one of them. Don’t ever forget that service is required as a member of each organization and you should do your part to maintain your chapter’s and organization’s standards for service.

Remark #4: BE YOURSELF

Don’t ever forget who you are. Joining an organization is great, and should enhance who you are, not change you. If your friends notice a change in your personality (in a negative way) after you joined your organization, then maybe you need to reevaluate yourself. Becoming Greek should never change who you are.

Remark #5: NETWORK

With traveling, comes the opportunity to network which will greatly benefit any college student and becoming Greek will better your chances of networking with professionals who share a commonality with you. Network with your grad chapter and members of other organizations because you never know when you’ll need a reference or a mentor for your field of study/work. Once again, take advantage of networking, especially for Greek events like homecoming or Greek Picnics!
